Should Christians Pay Taxes?

“Tell us, therefore, what do you think? Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness…And He said to them, render therefore to Caesar the things that are his and to God the things that are God’s.”
Matthew 22:17-21 (NKJV)

Although the government tax year begins 6 April, the deadline for paying your taxes is midnight on 31 January 2018. It has been said that taxes and death no one can avoid. The subject of taxes has become a hot potato for internet companies, and a burning issue in the past presidential debate in USA.

But for a moment I would like to digress and look back at the past history of Israel. I am reminded of the time when Israel was under a Theocracy. They asked for a human king . God told Samuel, they are rejecting Me, that I should not reign over them. And a stark warning was given by God as to what the human kings would do to them and their children and their property (read 1 Samuel 8:7-19).

King Solomon was the richest recorded king, but he taxed his people heavily. His son made it even worse for Israel until eventually his kingdom was divided. 1 Kings 12:10-11 records that Rehoboam had said to them: “My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s waist! And now, whereas my father put a heavy yoke on you, I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!”

Today people are burdened with heavy taxes still, and it will ever be so until the kingdom of God is established under the King of Peace, who will bring peace and prosperity all over the world. Jesus was born to be the King of Kings and Lord of Lords as we read in Luke 1:32-33 “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” This is the refreshing view of the future through the word of God.

In the mean time, we are to obey the law of the land and pay our taxes as the Apostle Paul was inspired to write in Romans 13:6-7, “For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honour to whom honour.”

Father in heaven, send our Saviour quickly. Lord Jesus, please come quickly.
