Holiness Of God

“Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.”
Hebrews 12:14 (NKJV)

The subject of the holiness of God is a daunting challenge, for it searches the innermost depth of our hearts. Through this reality check, I found a huge shortfall in my Christian living. Nevertheless, I am pressing toward the mark with the help of the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ living His life in me.

God is holy and He wants us to be holy. 1 Peter 1:16 tells us “because it is written,- Be holy, for I am holy.” No one will see God without holiness as the header scripture says. We cannot comprehend the greatness of holiness of God without coming to see the depth of sinfulness of sin in our lives. We are to express holiness by total surrender to God in loving Him with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, and loving others as ourselves.

The Holiness of God reveals His Holy character. We need to live the holy Christian life. A holy Christian will seek to tune in to the mind of God, endeavouring to shun every sin, to have the mind of Christ and to be meek, lowly, temperate, pursuing purity of heart, seeking humility, setting mind on the things above, mortifying the deeds of the flesh, willing to lay down our lives for others.

God commands holiness. Holiness in us demonstrates our faith in Jesus Christ, a proof that we love Him in sincerity. It is an evidence that we are the children of the Holy God. By living the holy life, set apart for God, we reflect Jesus in our lives and influence those who come in contact with us.

Unholy persons cannot be happy in the presence of the holy righteous God. On the contrary, a holy person is the temple of the living God. Read 2 Corinthians 6:16 & 18, “For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said, ‘I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people…I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.’” Further reading in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 reveals, “Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is Holy, which temple you are.”

As the Apostle Peter says, “But you are a chosen generation , a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). And in Revelation 4:8 the angels proclaim: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come.” Let that be our Prayer.

Holy Father, You are God who wants us to be holy. Purify us and make us holy. This plea I make in the name of our perfect, sinless and Holy Saviour, Jesus Christ our High Priest.
