Our Cunning Plans

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:9 (NIV)

‘I have a cunning plan!’ The ragged friend of Blackadder jubilantly announces. The successful comedy series gave us this popular catch phrase. The ‘plan’ is seldom cunning – often leading to hilarious disaster. Robert Burns, the 18th century Scottish poet wrote in his poem To a Mouse, ‘The best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft agley,’ translated means ‘The best laid schemes of mice and men go often askew.’

God tells us that our plans are not His, in Isaiah 55:8 He tells us “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the LORD.’” When we go it alone with our ‘cunning plans,’ we frequently fail with serious consequences. Proverbs 14:12 warns “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” Our stubborn independence began in the Garden of Eden and remains with humanity today—you and me. Our refusal to listen to our Creator manifests itself in the problems of the world today.

Thanks be to God—He sent His Son to die for us in our sins, He alone has paid the price for our ‘cunning plans’ (sins). If we surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ by following Him, we will become like Him and therefore will forsake our ‘cunning plans.’ “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

Relax, Baldrick, your cunning plans will one day be no more! God is great in His mercy and compassion in allowing us a route (the Lord Jesus) out of the morass our sins have created.

Thank you, Father, for your amazing love that knows no bounds – grant us submissive hearts that we may follow Jesus as your obedient children.
