God’s Angels, Part 4—Revelation

“Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels…and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.”
Revelation 5:11 (NKJV)

In the fourth and final, part of this series on angels, I would like to touch on a few interesting biblical revelations. Firstly, as the header scripture suggests, there are scores of millions of angels who are faithful to God’s divine will. One of their purposes is to watch out for God’s children who are called to salvation, and to report back to him. What a wonderful act of love and blessing that is for us humans! Their concern for us runs so deep that “…there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15:10).

Interestingly, Paul informs us in 1 Corinthians 6:3 that when we are glorified in the future world we shall judge angels. That’s a powerful statement indeed, but could Paul be saying here that we will have great opportunity to serve them, as they had opportunity serving us while we were mere mortals? There’s no doubt it doesn’t mean that the resurrected saints will “lord it” over the angels in any way. That, of course, would not be in keeping with the will of God.

As for the promised return of Christ to earth, we are told that not even the angels of heaven know the day or hour, but only the Father (Matthew 24:36). Jesus said that “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory” (Matthew 25:31). We don’t know how soon that will take place, but may our loving Father speed that glorious day!

God’s angels keep guard over us even while we sleep, and it’s appropriate, therefore, that we give God thanks often for them and the great work they do. The writer of the old hymn, “Angels Watching Over Me,” penned it well when he wrote these lyrics:

Now I lay me down to sleep.
Angels watching over me, my Lord.
Pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Angels watching over me.

Prayer
Father in heaven, thank you for your holy angels who have existed since the creation of the heavens and the earth. We thank you, sincerely, that you have placed them on this planet to serve you and us—humans whom you have chosen for salvation. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
