Advent—A Time of Joy

“‘As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy.’”
Luke 1:44 (NIV UK)

Advent includes Christ’s first coming, but also looks to the time when Christ is to come again. In fact, that has always been the main focus on Advent, despite Christmas—on Christ’s second coming.

We can, however, look at Christ’s first coming as the evidence or certainty, of God’s promise that Christ will come again! As the event, which makes everything promised for the future—including God’s hope and peace—merely the prelude to the joy of his promised return.

The joy expressed by the angelic host at Christ’s first coming is nothing to that which will be evident at his second coming and the beginning of Christ’s promised kingdom: “And there were shepherds living out in the fields near by, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger’. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favour rests’” (Luke 2:8-14).

At this Advent season of the year, we celebrate Christ’s first coming and the hope, peace and joy this heralded for mankind. But let’s also remember that Christ is coming again, and with him will come the fulfilment of that same promise of hope, peace and joy for all eternity. May God speed that day!

Prayer
Holy Father, by looking at and remembering the things you have done in the past, we may be assured of those things you tell us will happen in the future. Thus as certain, we may have joy now, and hope and peace that what you have determined and promised will come to pass. For this we praise your name. In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen
