God’s Angels, Part 2—Messengers

“The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city…”
Genesis 19:1 (NIV)

In part one of this short series on angels, we focused on who and what God’s holy angels are. We also discussed their purpose as being God’s messengers and ministers on behalf of human beings whom God has called to salvation.

In this part two we will take a look at a couple of biblical examples where God used angels as his messengers to communicate with people.

First, the account of Lot (Abraham’s nephew), who lived in the city of Sodom, the ruins of which are southeast of the Dead Sea in today’s State of Israel. When God sent two angels to visit Lot, Lot urged them to stay the night at his place for their personal safety. Being a spiritually dark city (along with neighbouring Gomorrah), the men of the city desired to see the angels and have illegitimate relations with them. Amongst other sinful excesses, the ungodly conduct of these cities angered God, and he sent his angels to warn and urge Lot and his family to escape the punishment that was imminent. For the full and sad, story of what occurred, please refer to the account in Genesis 19:1-29.

Secondly, a much happier story—the amazing story of the birth of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. On the day of Jesus’ birth, an angel appeared to a few shepherds, who were guarding their sheep near the town of Bethlehem. After informing them about the birth of the Saviour of the world, the angel left them and the shepherds hurried to see the new-born Jesus (Luke 2:8-20). Without doubt, the shepherds’ lives would never be the same again after this amazing angelic encounter.

These two biblical examples give us revealed knowledge of angelic activity, as directed by God for the benefit of Lot’s family and the shepherds at the birth of Christ.

Do God’s angels still perform miracles in our modern age? Well, yes, they most certainly do, and we will touch on that subject next time.

Prayer
Thank you, Father, for your holy angels who, in biblical times, came to the rescue of people in serious circumstances. Thank you also for the angel who informed the shepherds of the birth of your Son, Jesus, on that momentous day over 2000 years ago. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
