Advent—A Time of Peace

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
John 14:27 (NIV)

Advent as a Christian season may include Christmas, but it focuses beyond that, to a time of peace promised to us in the future. Christ at his death left as his sole legacy (see above) peace. And it was, and is, only made possible by a God who so loves mankind as to demonstrate his peace for us rather than merely to talk about it.

In our world many wish for peace. Many work for peace, and many talk and sing about peace. In the words of one song: “O come, desire of nations, bind in one the hearts of all mankind; Bid thou our sad divisions cease, And be thyself our Prince of Peace.”

But only God can truly bring this world peace. Too often our peace is, in the words of another song: “I want peace, but [through] my ways; this world—they say otherwise.” Christ’s peace is not what the world looks to. His is a peace that this world doesn’t yet understand. His is a peace that supersedes our limited concepts of peace. He desires true peace, a peace as he, and he alone, sees: “Bring us to a new place. A place where you have set order. Come Lord, come to this world. Bring your peace”—another song expressing Isaiah 9:7.

Our God is so great, and his desire for us is so high, that he is prepared to put up with this sorry world we have created in our own image. But time will come, because he has so decreed and foreseen, when his peace will come in all its fulness. Christians can rest and have hope in that assurance, because we have been bequeathed that peace already in measure.

Majestic Father, as your ways are higher than ours, so is your concept of peace higher than ours. Thank you for the gift of that peace, not out of our troubles, but in our troubles. We are at peace, and we rest our hope in you. In Jesus’ name we pray.
