Love Eternal

“…keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.”
Jude 21 (NIV)

Did you read or hear a few years ago about the once lost-in-love tortoises that fell out of love?

Two giant tortoises, who had been an established couple for around a hundred years, no longer saw eye to eye. Whenever in the same enclosed space, they hissed with hostility and acted aggressively one towards the other. Their keepers in the zoo in Austria, where the animals were housed, were perplexed. With one of longest life expectancies in the animal kingdom, how would the tortoises continue to live together?

This raises all kinds of questions, not just for tortoises, but for us religious types also. For example, Christianity claims that the gift of God is eternal life. Really? How will this work? Human beings can barely get along without wars and battles as it is. How in the world will we live for ever with one another in peace and harmony? It sounds too pie-in-the-sky.

Of course we don’t really know what eternity is like. We assume it is like this life but only better and longer, much longer…forever, in fact. It is, however, a spiritual dimension that we don’t fathom. God alone inhabits eternity. The only clue to the harmony of eternity lies in the relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They are eternally together and eternally one. This is so far from our physical and emotional experience that we can’t get it easily. God is harmonious togetherness. God is everlasting love, and his desire is to share that love with us.

Living forever is going to be good because God is good. It is not going to be a question of relationships turning sour over the course of time as in the story of the two tortoises.

Let’s keep the hope of eternity in our hearts.

Great God in heaven, thank you for relationships that we have one with another, and thank you for the hope of sharing an eternal relationship with you. In Jesus’ name.
