Your Country Needs You

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NIVUK)

The Lord Kitchener Poster with the pointing finger and inscription “Your Country Needs You” appeared in September 1914, at the beginning of the 1st World War, a national crisis for Britain and the Commonwealth of nations. Today, the nation is facing another crisis with economic implications—a departing from the European Economic Community. We do not need foot soldiers with guns in this crisis. But we do need prayer warriors! “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6). And in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 we are exhorted to “pray continually.”

We, who have access to the Throne of Grace, need to pray for our national leader and those responsible for negotiating our exit from the EU, that God will grant to them the spirit of wisdom, knowledge, courage, good judgement and any other skills that they need in order to negotiate a fair deal for the nations. The task is not easy for our negotiators. The bureaucrats of the EU do not want other countries to follow Britain’s example in leaving, so they will have to make it difficult and costly to exit!

As members of the Body of Christ, the church, we can play our part in this crisis—“Our Country Needs Us.” Whatever the outcome, it will affect all of us who live in the United Kingdom.

Thank you Father that we can come into your presence and let all our requests be made known to you. Please grant to those who are responsible for negotiating Britain’s exit from the EU, the skill and wisdom needed.
