The Blessing of Burdens

“For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.”
2 Corinthians 4:17 (NIV)

The story is told about a grandfather clock that had stood in the same corner of a room, faithfully ticking off the minutes and hours, day after day. In the clock was a heavy weight that was pulled to the top each night to keep it going. Then one day the clock was sold and the new owner noticed the heavy weight. “Too bad,” he said, “That such an old clock should have to bear so great a load.” So he took the weight off the clock. At once the clock stopped ticking. “Why did you do that?” Asked the clock. “I wanted to lighten your burden.” said the man. “Please put it back,” said the clock. “That’s what keeps me going.”

Most people are looking for an easy way through life. They think that if they had no burdens they could live pleasantly and triumphantly. They don’t realize that God often keeps us going spiritually by the weight that seems to pull us down. Trials can give our feet spiritual traction. Our burdens not only bring us blessings in this life, but they are also “working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

There will be times when God allows people to carry a burden in order to keep them from being conceited, to keep us humble so we rely on God’s grace. The Apostle Paul said in (2 Corinthians 12:6-7 “Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say, or. because of these surpassingly great revelations. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in the flesh, (burden) a messenger of Satan, to torment me.”

In Galatians 6:2 believers are encouraged to carry one another’s burdens, whatever these may be. Our greatest burden-bearer is Jesus Christ our Lord. He says “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light!” (Matthew 11:28-30).

Like the grandfather clock that needed the weight of burden to keep going, God will allow his people to carry the weight of burden to help us grow spiritually. God will remove the burdens in His time. Our light and momentary troubles (Burdens) are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

Eternal God, we thank you for Jesus Christ our burden-bearer. Leaving us an example that we should bear one another’s burdens. In Jesus name.
