Set Your Mind On Things Above

“We break down every thought and proud thing that puts itself up against the wisdom of God. We take hold of every thought and make it obey Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 (NLV)

This scripture means that when we become aware of a wrong thought in our minds, we need to choose immediately not to think it. How often will we need to make the right choice? The answer is every day for the rest of our lives!

God has given us the ability to think for ourselves, not merely be stuck with whatever comes into our minds from some random or outside source. We all need to be very selective as to what we watch or listen to. If it is not wholesome or Godly, we should turn it off, put it out of our minds and walk away from it without delay. 1 Timothy 6:11-12 (NKJV) tells us, “But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called…”

We all need to spend time studying the Bible every day so that we can learn to think according to God’s Word. When we do this, we will begin to experience the kind of lives that God desires. After all, Jesus died so that we could have access to His Spirit – the power to overcome wrong thoughts. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10 NKJV). The way to live the abundant life is to cast down wrong thoughts, through the power of the Holy Spirit, and to think on things that are holy, just and good. Philippians 4:8 encourages us, “Christian brothers, keep your minds thinking about whatever is true, whatever is respected, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever can be loved, and whatever is well thought of. If there is anything good and worth giving thanks for, think about these things.”

Let us all aim through the power of the Holy Spirit, to think thoughts that are loving, kind and good, and to reject the thoughts that are not!

Dear God, help us to realise the importance of setting our minds on the things that are above. Help to learn to cast down wrong thoughts and to think thoughts that are loving kind and good.
