Transient Global Amnesia

“I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”
Isaiah 43:25 (NIV)

One cannot help but wonder how God can remember no more? It can be difficult for us humans to understand how it is possible for God ‘to remember our sins no more.’ Humanly, we may forgive, but for us to completely forget—to remember no more – ever! is almost impossible! Yet God tells us that he has completely removed our sins. “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us” Psalm 103:12 (KJV).

A couple of years ago I had a very disconcerting experience. For a brief period of time I had a temporary lapse of memory. It was quite a bizarre experience, difficult to explain in hindsight because I had absolutely no memory of what had happened. I have only been able to piece together some of the details of what actually took place based on what those involved have told me. No matter how much or how hard I try to conjure up the whole sequence, there is only a total blank.

It transpired, after being subjected to myriad medical tests and scans, that I had experienced something called Transient Global Amnesia. One definition of this condition states that during an episode of transient global amnesia, your recall of recent events simply vanishes, so you can’t remember where you are or how you got there. In addition, you may not remember anything about what’s happening in the here and now, although you know who you are and recognise people in your life.

Understanding that experience has given me a tiny glimpse of what must occur with God when he chooses to deliberately remove his memory of our sins. While transient global amnesia was actually quite a frightening experience for me (or so I’m told) the knowledge and experience of that absolutely blank period of time is also surprisingly reassuring. To know that in a similar way, God has so completely eradicated our sins in his memory. If he remembers them no more, then it is time for us to move on from our sins to embrace the clean slate, the new day, the fresh start that God blesses us with through the sacrifice of Jesus. Surely that has to be a source of great comfort!

Prayer
Our great almighty God! How great and how merciful you are, that you can and do obliterate our sins completely from your memory! What a precious gift that is given to us by your Son and our Saviour!
Amen
