You Are Special

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

A motivational speaker began his seminar by holding up a £20 note and asking his audience ‘who would like it?’ Hands started going up around the room. He then crumpled up the £20 note and asked, ‘who still wants it?’ Still the hands were in the air. He dropped the £20 note to the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up all dirty and crumpled and asked again, ‘who still wants it?’ Still the hands were in the air. Then he said, “today you have all learned a valuable lesson. No matter what I did to this £20 note, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It is still worth £20. Many times in our lives we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by people or circumstances that come our way. We can feel as though we are worthless and lose heart. But whatever has happened or will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special. Don’t ever forget it.”

It’s natural to lose heart when we are struggling with all the difficult things life throws at us. King David went through that experience and offers us some valuable advice: “I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait on the LORD; Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the LORD!” (Psalm 27:13-14 NKJ)

There are 3 principles here in Psalm 27 to help us not to lose heart:
1. Believe in the goodness of God. As we read in verse 13, “I had believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD.” We are so valuable to him that he has made provision for our salvation (verse 1) and will take care of our lives (verse 10)
2. Patiently wait on God’s timetable. As we read in verse 14, “Wait on the LORD…Wait, I say, on the LORD!” God will work things out for us in his own way and in his own timescale. “Our suffering is light and temporary and is producing for us an eternal glory that is greater than anything we can imagine.” (2 Corinthians 4:17 God’s Word Translation)
3. God will strengthen us. As we read in Psalm 27:14, “Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart.” God will not leave us on own in our Christian walk, but will give us the strength to keep moving forward. He is the ‘strength of our life’ says Psalm 27:1, and will lead us in a smooth path (verse 11).

We are so special to God that he displays his goodness to us; he will work things out for us at just the right time and will empower us to live for him. Don’t ever forget it, and don’t lose heart.

Father, thank you that we are so special to you, that you would send your son to die for us. As we experience your extravagant goodness, your perfect timing and your incomparable strength, help us to realise our value and not lose heart.
