The Gift of Prayer

“Then who can sentence us to death? No one. Christ Jesus is at the right hand of God and is also praying for us. He died. More than that, he was raised to life.”
Romans 8:34 (NIRV)

Prayer is the most important activity in the life of a Christian. But there are times when we do not know what to pray for as we ought. (Romans 8:26). Prayer is not a natural activity for us human beings. That is why we have been given the Lord’s Prayer as an outline of how to pray (Matthew 6:9–13). We have been created to be in a love relationship with God, who is love. So we need to be in regular and constant communication with the Father and the Son through the Spirit.

The gift of prayer is a very important way for this relationship to be established in us. If we do not communicate with God in prayer, how will we ever learn to love him? When Jesus was here on earth in person, he taught us how to pray. Now that he is at the right hand of the Father, he prays on our behalf. Quoting from the book “A Passion for Christ – The Vision that Ignites Ministry” by the Torrance brothers: “As we pray in faith, Christ takes our prayers, cleanses them, makes them his prayers to the Father, presenting us in himself to the Father, and makes his prayers our prayers …When we do not know how to pray as we ought, he comes to open our hearts in prayer and lead us in our intercessions…Prayer is the gift of participation through the Spirit in the prayers of Jesus Christ the only Mediator.”

Jesus prays for us and with us, and leads us in our prayers—it is a shared activity! So the next time you bow your head, clasp your hands, bend your knees, or whenever, however and where-ever you pray, remember that you are not alone. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all involved in your prayer requests.

Abba, Father, thank you for sending Jesus to be the vicarious man who prays for us and with us. He is our faithful brother and friend who leads us in our prayers.
