Encourage One Another

“And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.”
Hebrews 10:25 (NLT)

I couldn’t stop myself from jumping up and down with excitement. I’d just received a telephone call to let me know that the church denomination that I wanted to worship with were planning regular weekly services closer to my home. I would still have to travel to the meeting hall from my Island home by ferry and train, but that would be a small inconvenience compared to the opportunity of meeting with Church family every week and learning more about God’s way of life. I would also enjoy the added blessing of sharing that journey with my parents, sister, brother-in-law and their two sons.

It’s hard to believe that 40 years have passed since that memorable telephone call. Circumstances have changed in that time. My parents await the resurrection, and I now share a different journey with my husband; but I’m grateful that I still look forward to meeting Church family each week as I continue to learn how to love God and love neighbour.

Meeting together gives us the opportunity to encourage one another. We learn from other people’s experiences. We enrich each other in our walk with God. We can all aspire to be like Barnabas who was recorded in Acts 4:36 as being as ‘a son of encouragement.’

What a blessing to be known like that.

Prayer
Father, please fill us with your encouragement so that we can, in turn, encourage others in their time of need. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
