A Sense of Purpose

“I have raised up a young man from among the people. I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him.
Psalm 89:19-20 (NIV)

Having a sense of purpose motivates us and drives us on to achieve more in life.

It may be that our life seems purposeless. Perhaps you’ve seen a piece of wood drifting aimlessly along in the waters of the sea, or of a river, loch or lake. It doesn’t seem to be going anywhere in particular, and is carried to and fro according to the current or the flow. We can be like that, just drifting without any direction in our life, just reacting to current fashions, ideas and thinking with no specific ideas of our own.

Also, sometimes people can have unhelpful purposes and be excited about them. One of the biblical writers, Paul, recognised that. He said, “It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good” (Galatians 4:18 NIV).

In the scripture above God takes a young man called David and gives him a sense of purpose that is good and helpful. This is what God does when he calls us to accept his grace. In the same way that God raised David up, so God calls us to follow him. The ancient customs of anointing with oil sounds unusual to us, and it refers to recognising that God has given us a spiritual purpose in life. David went on to be a great king even though he had many failings. What would make a difference to him was that he knew that, with God, his life was not pointless, and that God had supplied him with an over-riding sense of purpose. This would inform the young King David’s short-term and long-term goals, and give him direction in life.

What about you? Are you drifting through life, letting life happen to you more than you happen to life? Are your plans and purposes helpful, not just to you but also to others? Above all, what we all need to do is to accept God’s purpose for us, which is that we enjoy a loving and gracious life with him through his Son, Jesus.

Find your sense of purpose in Jesus Christ.

Father, I accept your gracious purpose in my life. In Jesus’ name.
