Godliness With Contentment

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”
Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

We live in a world that is ungodly and full of discontent. We are constantly being bombarded with advertisements that make us think or feel that we need their product or service. Sometimes that may be true, but more often than not we just simply do not need the product or service, and we may end up feeling discontented, because we think that we may be missing out on something.

Do we really need a new car, a new home, an exotic holiday, an exciting cruise or the many things and services that are advertised? Sometimes we do, and many times we do not really need them. A very helpful scripture in combating this dilemma of being contented in a discontented world is James 1:17, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

1 Timothy 6:6 tells us that “godliness with contentment is great gain.” Godliness with contentment is clearly a gift from the Father of lights. We cannot make ourselves Godly, only God can do that, and being contented is also a gift from God. “Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his (or her) lot and rejoice in his (or her) toil—this is the gift of God” (Ecclesiastes 5:19). We who live in the western world are blessed with wealth and possessions compared to many who are living in the third world! Instead of complaining and constantly wanting more, we should be thankful.

It is clearly God’s will that we experience ‘godliness with contentment.’ The ball is now in our court, because we can ask our Father of lights for this wonderful gift. 1 John 5:14-15 says, “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” Of course, if you already have this gift, you do not need to ask for it. But there is no harm in asking God for an increase in Godliness with contentment.

Thank you, Father, for all the good gifts that you have given to us. Please grant to me this special gift of godliness with contentment. In Jesus’ name I pray.
