Don’t Limit God !

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways my ways,’ says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.’”
Isaiah 55:8-9 (NKJV)

One of the hardest things for some Christians, and all non Christians, to understand is that God’s love and plan for humanity is not limited to Christians. God, in the person of Jesus Christ, lived a perfect sinless human life, then died as a perfect sacrifice to pay the death penalty for sin. Not just for the sins of Christians but of all humanity, even the most wicked, evil and unlovable. While that may seem incredible, the moment you decide that membership of your Christian church, your tribe, or your nation is the only way to God and salvation, you are limiting God.

But God can never be, and will never be, limited by us!

It is true that in the part of the Bible called the old testament, God did choose to work with the nation of Israel, from which many Jewish people today believe they are God’s chosen people. But in the new testament, through Jesus Christ, God opened salvation to everyone ( Galatians 3:24-29).

Even though many don’t respond or relate to God today, it does not stop God from knowing them, working with them, and patiently waiting for the day when they will want to know God. The fact that many individuals today have forgotten or ignore God, does not mean that God has forgotten or ignores them!

As Christians we have responded to God and seek to develop our relationship through prayer, study, occasional fasting and through attending church. We, of all people, should never limit God, and should rejoice that God’s plan involves all humanity in such a way that all will have the opportunity to know Him and respond to Him. Some, but hopefully a very small number, will always reject God because He has given us the free will to do so. But whenever we try to limit God, to make Him in our image, we are showing our limitations, not God’s. Nowhere in the Bible will you find that Christ died only for this church, only for Christians, only for Jews, only for this tribe or that nation. Fortunately for us, God’s love is immeasurably greater than our human limitations.

Gracious God of love, expand our understanding so that we may never fall into the trap of limiting You. In Jesus’ name we pray.
