The Third Degree

“…but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity..”
1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

Have you heard of the ‘three-degree rule’? I read an article in a newspaper (Daily Mail 19 March 2017) which talked about a book by a top scientist that revealed the amazing anti-aging power of kindness. The article was very interesting, with sections, ‘Doing Good Deeds Smoothes Your Wrinkles,’ ‘Thinking of Others Beats Depression,’ Compassion Can Protect Your Heart,’ and ‘It’s Contagious’.

The section on ‘It’s Contagious’ contained the ‘three-degree rule.’ When we do a good deed which others see, they will often go on to do a good deed themselves and this will inspire yet another person to be kind or do a good deed (three degrees). The article said that ‘through one act, you can set in motion a chain of positive events.’

Dame Jane Goodall, renowned primatologist, anthropologist and UN Messenger of Peace, said “You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” Our actions affect others for good and for bad. I have noticed that in busy traffic when I see someone letting a waiting car into the queue, it will make me more considerate and aware of others, and more likely to be courteous, too. A smile costs nothing but brightens someone’s day, and is also contagious because they often smile back. Matthew 5:16 says to let your light shine so that other may see your good deeds and glorify God.

Rabbi Yehuda Berg is quoted often, “Hurt people, hurt people ~ that’s how pain patterns get passed on ~ generation after generation after generation. Break the chain today—meet anger with sympathy; contempt with compassion; and cruelty with kindness. Greet grimaces with smiles. Forgive and forget about finding fault. Love is the weapon of the future!”

Instead of giving people the third degree, let’s use the three-degree rule!

Help us to set a good example in all that we do, Father in Heaven, so that others will come to see your love through us.
