Mirror Faith

“Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.
James 1:23-24 MSG)

Ancient mirrors were made of metal, and would often reveal an imperfect reflection when you used them. Sometimes they gave just a dark and shady hint of reality with no clear definition, and you’d have to use them regularly if you wanted to remember what you really looked like.

Here the Apostle James stresses that hearing without doing is futile, and he uses the concept of a mirror to drive home his point. Can you remember right now, without looking at a mirror or a photo, what you look like? Imagine that you peer at yourself in a mirror and you see your face, and then you go away and can’t recall the image. This is like someone who casually listens to what God says and does not put what he hears into practice. It is only by doing that we reinforce what we’ve heard and thus reflect God’s words in how we live.

Of course, James explains, we should not be so wrapped up in ourselves that we’re constantly looking at ourselves in a mirror. Rather, it’s better to look intently at the perfection of God’s words so that, in studying and applying them, they become part of us. “…whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—–even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action” (verse 25).

Let’s listen to what God tells us to be and to do, and, with the help of his Spirit, put his words into action, and thus we grow into the image of his Son, Jesus Christ.

Prayer
Thank you, Father, that you reach out to us and give us instructions about how to live the resurrected life of Jesus. Help us to listen to and to put your words into action in our lives. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
