A Pocketful of Prayers

“It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.”
Revelation 19:8 (NASB)

Recently, I had the heart-rending task of sorting out my late husband’s wardrobe. Despite the music hall jokes, I never found the need to rifle through his pockets when he was alive, but had to do so now, prior to giving them away. There were no handkerchiefs, old theatre tickets, or receipts, just one item—prayer lists he had written out in preparation for giving intercessory prayers at church. Several suit pockets contained them, mentioning names and situations, all written with the deepest concern for others. Discovering these was a most humbling experience. I had the privilege of knowing the Christian character of this man for almost fifty years, but to read these felt like an intrusion into his relationship with his God.

The uncovering of these prayers made me realise how close my husband was, and still is, to God. His faith in His Father saw him through a devastatingly painful illness without complaint. God really was his refuge and his strength. He lived Psalm 62:7, “On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.” Such faith has its reward: transformation and restoration by the Holy Spirit.

I still believe he has prayers in his pockets, but now he no longer needs a physical wardrobe—he is clothed in fine linen tailored by the Master Creator (Revelation 19:8).

Wonderful God who has so much in store for us your children, I thank you for your promises of eternal life, abundant life. Thank you for making this possible by the blood of your Son, our Saviour.
