Church Chat

Then those who feared and loved the Lord spoke often of him to each other.”
Malachi 3:16 (TLB)

Have you ever been in an online chat room? Nowadays we don’t have to be in the same physical room to have a conversation with someone else. There are all kinds of internet platforms through which we can talk to others. My second-youngest granddaughter lives in Canada, but my wife and I can see her and talk to her regularly via our phone or computer.

It’s been speculated that, as time goes on, internet communities will function in the same way as churches do, giving people encouragement and help at times of need.

Church should be a safe community where people can share their hopes and dreams with those of like mind and where we can be comforted when distressed. It’s not, however, just about focussing on ourselves. In the book of Malachi the prophet is discussing about how self-centred the religious community had become, and he calls on believers to re-align themselves with God and to put God back in the centre of their lives and conversations.

The Living Bible’s translation of the leading verse is of note: it says that those who “loved the Lord spoke often of him”, not “spoke often of themselves and their opinions”. Some other translations don’t capture that idea, but the context implies it. Of course, God wants us to talk to each other about how we feel and what we think. But, the point is: if we love the Lord, we’ll also talk often to each other about him.

So, what do we talk about when we get together as Christians? Surely our church chat should feature God and what he has done for us.

Prayer
We love you, Father, and please help us through your Spirit to talk often of you and of the wonderful salvation we have received in and through your Son, Jesus. In his name.
Amen
