Who is This Jesus?

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20 (NKJV)

Christian Mission is taking the Gospel message about Jesus to the world. For us to be prepared for mission, we need to know and understand the relationship we have with Christ and how best to communicate this vital information to the people we meet. Who is this Jesus and what is His role in your life and mine?

In John 1:1-5 we learn that the Word which is Jesus was with God and He was the exact representation of God. All things were made and came into existence through Him. In Him was Life eternal and the Life was the Light of men. We also know that Jesus was conceived in Mary by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:20). He became flesh and came to dwell among us. In Colossians 1:15 we are told that He is the Firstborn of all creation.

In the Bible, there are many references to Jesus as the Christ (John 1:17), the Son of Man (John 1:34), the Lamb of God (John 1:36), Rabbi (John 1:38), The Messiah (John 1:41), The Anointed One (John 1:41), The Good Shepherd (John 10:11). All these names and more describe who Jesus is and we could do a study on each, but for this study I want to focus purely on the person Jesus.

The life that we now have in Christ was made possible through His death and resurrection. To those of us who believe and have this hope of re-birth in us, Jesus said even though we die, yet we will live again to a resurrected new and spirit-filled life.

What a future we have. We can’t suppress this knowledge. We must make it known to a hurting world. But we must have Christ in us and believe in Him with all our being to be able to counter the negatives that we will come up against. This is a great responsibility, and we can’t do it without the Holy Spirit. We need Him at the forefront of every decision that we must make about ‘mission,’ how to go about it and the tools we need to make it a success.

We pray that Jesus will be at the centre of everything we do so that, armed with the gospel of truth, we will in faith, share this wonderful truth with others.
