An Amazing Calling

“God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”
1 Corinthians 1:9 (NIV)

Many people often wonder what is their vocation in life? What are their gifts or talents? What is their calling? There are many vocations that attract people: teaching, medicine, law, banking, science, engineering, religion, government etc. People with gifts or talents may become artists, musicians, sports men and women, authors of books, etc.

God has given to each of us a special calling. As stated above in the anchor scripture, that calling is to be in a love relationship with the Son of God. God is love, and Jesus is God the Son. We know that he loves us. (John 3:16). And we are instructed to love him (Matthew 22:37). So it is a love relationship.

This special calling is for believers. If you are not a believer, it may not make any sense to you. But if you are a believer, it is the best thing that could possibly happen to you! It can be considered as the treasure hidden in a field or the pearl of great price. (Matthew 13:44-46). It is a calling that cannot be taken lightly or for granted. Romans 11:29 says “for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.” It cannot be revoked, changed, reversed, recalled; it is unable to be repealed or annulled. It is unalterable. There is no going back with this special and amazing calling. There is nothing else that is more exciting than to be called into fellowship with the Creator of the universe and all life! He is our friend, brother, Saviour, Redeemer, King, Lord and our God.

It is the only reason that we are blessed with life, both physical and spiritual. He is our life. The apostle Paul recognised the importance of this amazing calling: “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13-14). Do not let the past be a hindrance to this wonderful calling.

Father in heaven, thank you for calling me into fellowship with Jesus. Please enable me to take this calling seriously and not allow the cares of this life to get in the way. In Jesus’ name I pray.
