There Are No Mistakes

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
Romans 8:28 (NIV)

Recently, I heard a song with some thought-provoking words:

“They say there’s a universal plan
For every woman, for every man
I do believe there’s a higher power
But in our darkest hour
It’s hard to understand

So we start to question, start to doubt
We lose faith in what life’s all about.
Why did the right road take the wrong turn?
Why did our hearts break? Why’d we get burned?
Just like the seasons
There are reasons
For the path we take—
There are no mistakes
Just lessons to be learned.”

This song explores the questioning side of faith, when we wonder why bad things happen to us. Often, of course, they’re of our own making. Other times, we may pray for guidance in a certain situation only to find that the path we travel on seems to be leading us in the opposite direction…away from our goal.

If we allow God to teach us, the lessons we learn—from both the good and the bad—only strengthen our spiritual nature. We can rest in the sure knowledge that, whatever twists and turns our lives take, God is in ultimate control and will use it for a greater purpose often outside of our understanding.

It seems that people don’t always learn from their mistakes. For Christians however, it should be a different story, though we may sometimes feel discouraged. We say, “If only I could have my life again I would do things differently.” Maybe that is the whole point! Life is a learning curve and we are pressing towards a much greater goal. As Paul says in Philippians 3:13-14, “Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead. I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus.”

In the end there are no mistakes, just lessons to be learned.

Father, though our lives often lead us in a direction we’d rather not go, let us not be discouraged but rather to trust in you, knowing that the lessons we learn will be so valuable, not only in this life but for all eternity.
