The Purpose of the Holy Spirit

“And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you for ever.”
John 14:16 (NKJV)

The Holy Spirit is a gift from God bestowed upon us by His grace, requested by us in prayer, and received by us through the channel of faith. His purpose is to get right in the middle of our lives and help them all work out for the glory of God.

When we receive Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and ask Him to fill us with His Spirit, the Holy Spirit is not only in us, but He is with us, around us, all over us. He wants to be personally involved in our lives. He has been given to us to accomplish a whole series of things in us, though us, and for us.

When we surrender our lives to Jesus and depend completely on Him to live His life though us, the Holy Spirit is able to develop the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. This harvest is mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy. peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.” The Holy Spirit cannot develop the fruit of the Spirit in our lives when we depend on our own abilities. When we depend on Jesus to do this through the power of the Holy Spirit the fruit will be manifested in our lives. Philippians 4:13 tells us, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” There is no need to worry about the future or our salvation when we depend fully on Jesus. We are bought with a price and we belong to Jesus, as we read in 1 Corinthians 6:20, “For you were bought at a price; Therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

It is the Father’s will that everyone who believes in Jesus will receive the gift of everlasting life. Read it in John 6:40, “And this is the will of Him who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” What wonderful news that is!

Father God, thank You for sending Jesus to the earth in order to pay the price for all our sins. Help us to realize that when we depend on Jesus and on all that He has done for us, we belong to Him and that He will never let go of our hand.
