An Ideal Leader

Their leader will be one of their own; their ruler will arise from among them. I will bring him near and he will come close to me – for who is he who will devote himself to be close to me?’ declares the Lord.”
Jeremiah 30:21 (NIVUK)

Qualities of leadership are discussed often in the news, and so far in 2017 new leaders have been elected or appointed in various countries.

What should we look for in a leader?

There are so many possible answers and one of them is found in the book of Jeremiah. It may not top the list of attributes that people would name, yet, surely, it’s something desirable in this confused world of ours.

Jeremiah is describing the ideal leader in the verse above. He or she would come from the people. In other words, be known to them and, also, be aware of the problems the average person may face. More importantly he or she is known to God, and devotes himself or herself to getting closer to God.

The phrase “will devote himself to be close to me?” is variously translated. The Amplified Bible reads, “risk his life to approach Me?”; the 21st Century King James Version, “engaged his heart to approach unto Me?”; the Jubilee Bible 2000, “for who is this that softened his heart to approach unto me?” Each of those phrases broadens the understanding of what Jeremiah is discussing, and help us to grasp the essential point: a good leader seeks to get closer to God.

Let’s pray for godly leaders whose desire is to be close to God.

Great Father, in this increasingly ungodly world we need leaders who draw close to you. Help me in any leadership capacity that I fulfil to draw near to you for guidance and wisdom, and I pray for leaders who would seek to be close to you and to your ways. In Jesus’ name.
