No Other Gospel

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel – which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be condemned! As we have already said, so now I say it again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!”
Galatians 1:6-9 (NIV)

Although the above passage refers to Galatian converts being influenced to revert to Judaism, the passage is also aimed at anyone who is being swayed to follow any perversion of the truth of Christ. The entire 11th chapter of 2 Corinthians is devoted to false apostles. Verses 13-14 mention false apostles masquerading as apostles of Christ. “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light” (verse 14).

Charismatic preachers may teach what is called the ‘Health, Wealth & Happiness’ gospel, or ‘Name It And Claim It’ gospel, but is it the gospel truth? We need to study like the Bereans to see if what we hear is truth. Not everything you see on the ‘God Channel’ is good. Health, wealth and happiness? Try telling that to the apostle Paul after all the sufferings he went through! In 1 Corinthians he wrote that, “I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.” Hardly health and wealth from being an Apostle of Jesus Christ! And in 1 Corinthians 12:7-9 he states, “There was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’” Paul was never healed of his affliction of the flesh.

So, be careful who you listen to, lest you be led astray.

Lord, let me have a spirit of discernment and wisdom, so I may know what is true, and give me conviction to follow the Truth.
