“Listen…I Have Chosen You!”

“Do not be afraid—I will save you. I have called you by name—you are mine.”
Isaiah 43:1 (GNT)

I’m sure that every one of us at one time or another has received an offer through the post that begins with our Christian name and then tells us that, “You have been specially chosen…” It sounds so personal—it gives the impression that we are indeed very special and therefore our names are on a list to receive this exclusive offer. It’s a very nice feeling being special, isn’t it? Gives us a warm glow and brings a smile to our face. Unfortunately, these letters are totally insincere and those who are writing to us have just pulled our names from a list because of the products we buy or from some survey to which we responded. The personal touch is so important, but it needs to be the real thing and not a commercial imitation.

Over the centuries many people have been given a number, to degrade and de-humanise them. For example, slaves were branded with a number and prisoners in concentration camps were tattooed with a number, in order to remove that special thing that in some way makes us who we are—our name!

But notice, the scripture above has good news for us. It says that we are specially chosen and are called by our name! Peter also has something to add to this, telling us; “you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you—from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted” (1 Peter 2:9 MSG). I like this letter much better because it is genuine, sincere and above all written with great love for all of us! Notice what Paul tells the Christians at Colossae, “You are the people of God; he loved you and chose you for his own” (Colossians 3:12).

Doesn’t that sound just great? I hope it brings a smile to your face and gives you a warm glow and a feeling of belonging—belonging to God. King David was a man who really knew God and had an amazing relationship with him. God says this about his servant David “I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will” (Acts 13:22 NKJV). And David tells us in Psalm 4:3; “Remember that the Lord has chosen the righteous for his own, and he hears me when I call to him.” The special letter that we have from our Father informs us that we are loved, appreciated and treasured above everything else—isn’t that amazing?

Thank you, Father, for your incredible love—that you have chosen us especially for yourself and given us a future and a hope!
