Mindful Repentance

“Now I rejoice, not that you were made sorry, but that your sorrow led to repentance…For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.”
2 Corinthians 7:9-10 (NKJV)

The Amplified Bible describes repentance as changing your mind for the better. True repentance is not saying, I’m sorry I got caught in sin; true repentance means I’m going to change my mind, I’m going to turn away from that kind of behaviour, and I’m going to seek a new life in Christ. Repentance means to turn and go in another direction. It mean to turn away from sin and turn toward God.

We do not do this through our own effort! The Holy Spirit gives us the strength to do this when we submit ourselves to God and resist the devil. We read in James 4:7 “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” We all have to make a decision that we are going to resist what is evil! The Holy Spirit will lead us into God’s truth. But we have to make a decision that we are going to follow where He leads!

None of us do this perfectly, but the more that we love God and love others the more we will grow. Love is the main key to spiritual growth! 2 Corinthians 5:14 says “For the love of Christ compels us” that is, inspires us, guides us and motivates us.

We can have complete confidence that when Christ Jesus starts a work in us He will always complete the work. As it says in Philippians 1:6 “being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

What wonderful news that is!

Prayer
Father God, lead us into godly repentance. Give us the strength to resist evil as Your love flows through us and help us to realize that we have nothing to fear when we fully depend on Jesus to complete the work He has started in us.
Amen
