Covenant Or Contract?

“‘This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days,’ saith the Lord, ‘I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.’”
Hebrews 10:16-17 (KJV)

Covenant or Contract—what’s the difference you may ask? Dr. Alan Torrance in one of his presentations to our Denominational Conference for Ministers and Leaders in the Church, defined the difference by saying that a covenant is unconditional, while a contract has conditions attached. Thus a contract can be broken, but a covenant is for life.

Some people treat marriage like a contract—you do this or I leave—when it is actually a Covenant; for better or for worse as long as you both shall live.

Some people live their Christianity as though it is a contract with God: I will obey you as long as you bless me; and when things go wrong then God has let them down and not fulfilled his end of the bargain. Why do the wicked prosper? Why are there natural disasters? Why dreadful diseases?

We do not have a contract with God that he will protect us and heal us on every occasion. Yes, he is our protector and healer; but he is also God, who loves us. He is looking out for us and has our ultimate salvation in mind. We can trust him with our lives no matter what. We know this through the New Covenant that was witnessed by Jesus Christ, our Saviour, coming to bring us eternal life. It is a Covenant of Love and love cannot be conditional or it is not Love.

Prayer
God of Love, we are yours for better or for worse. Whatever may happen in this life, we know that you love us, and that
eternal life is waiting.
Amen
