How Long is the Guarantee Please?

“Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.”
Hebrews 7:22 (NIV)

How many times have you had an electrical appliance break down only to find it was a month out of its guarantee? The kettle that refuses to work when it is thirteen months old, the hairdryer we depend on which burns out just when we need it most and…yes, again, it is thirteen months old. We can write or remonstrate to the supplier but it will prove pointless – the answer is always the same ‘I am sorry madam, but your guarantee has expired!’ A cynical view would be that products are designed to last thirteen months, but at the end of the day they are only physical material items. Occasionally, we are encouraged to take out insurance on items – a warranty to replace them when they do let us down, however that too has an end date.

How blessed we are as God’s own children to have Jesus as our eternal guarantor. He has made it possible for us to stand assured on the consummate certainty of His promises. Note His words to Joshua in Joshua 1:5, “No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Jesus repeated this promise many times in the New Testament – the well-known verse being also in Mathew 28:20. “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Did you spot a ‘non liability clause’ anywhere in that verse? Did I miss reading an expiry date? No! The term of His guarantee is ALWAYS. Jesus is our Guarantor forever – let us be thankful.

Loving Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit, we thank you that you will never let us down. In this world of uncertainty and unreliability you are a constant presence in our lives.
