Me And My Shadow

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)

I got quite a fright on my walk this morning. It was dark and the sun was still in hiding, but the moon was bright – shining enough for me to cast a shadow as I walked.

However, at the angle that I was walking, I didn’t know I was casting a shadow. It was following along behind me, keeping pace, and I plodded along thinking deep thoughts, totally oblivious to the fact it was there.

I was also unaware that the angle of my shadow was changing as I walked – and that’s when I got my fright. I suddenly felt someone was walking along beside me. It was still dark, so had someone crept up silently to do me in?

I jumped to the right to escape, heart thumping, only to discover it was my shadow catching me up. There it was, dutifully keeping up with me, never leaving my side, and letting me know it was still there. It had even jumped when I did!

My dear old shadow, my inseparable companion; I almost felt like apologising for the shabby way I’d just treated it, as some sort of alien who was out to get me. I tried to explain, as my shadow stood there waiting with me, that it was dark, and the gloom makes me think all sorts of odd things. And that explanation seemed to calm things down, so on we walked together again, my inseparable shadow and me.

“Just like my other inseparable companion who never leaves my side,” I thought. Here I am in the dark with two faithful companions keeping pace with me every step. Never for a moment does Jesus veer off for other more interesting things either. He’s there with me always – just like me and my shadow.

Prayer
Father, we know now that we are no longer separate from Christ. No one is; and if only everyone knew that.
Amen
