The Good News About Jesus

God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures. The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line, and he was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Romans 1:2-4 (NLT)

Jesus is fully God and fully human, the one who fulfilled the purpose of the Old Testament writings.

When Paul wrote his opening remarks in his letter to the Christians in Rome, he stressed that Jesus was not some great man whom God had used, but rather Jesus is the Son of God, the Lord whose human birth into the royal line of David and whose salvation work on our behalf had been prophesied in Scripture.

His disciples did not appreciate fully Jesus’ relationship with the Old Testament scriptures, and how that Jesus was the ultimate fulfilment of the messianic prophecies. This was despite the fact that Jesus had explained to them: “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose” (Matthew 5:17). And their purpose was, as Paul explains above, the Good News about God’s Son.

After his resurrection from the dead Jesus was walking with some of those who had followed him. Again he stressed to them the relevance of how all his life related to the promises of God being fulfilled in him. He said, “When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled” (Luke 24:44).

If Christ had not fulfilled the prophecies about the Son of God, then he would not have been the Messiah. But he did fulfil them, and he is the Messiah!

That is Good News for us!

Holy Father, thank you for Jesus, your Son, who is fully human and fully divine, and who has fulfilled all the prophecies about the Messiah that through him we may be saved. In Jesus’ name.
