Accessing The Bible Daily

Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”
Acts 17:11 (NIVUK)

Have you ever wondered how the Bereans examined the Scriptures every day?

Theirs was a very different age from ours. There were no printing presses that provided multiple copies of the Bible for the general public; no electric lights to enable people to read easily when it got dark; no handy indexes of Scripture or computer search engines so that you could find the reference you wanted. In fact, what they had to do was go physically to the synagogue and get out the hand-copied Old Testament scrolls and painstakingly go through them to find the passage they wanted to check. No wonder Luke says the Bereans had “great eagerness” – it seems like an understatement.

Today we have more access to the Bible than ever before. But, for many of us, our life is so hectic or so full of distractions that we fail to take advantage of how available the Bible is. Often Bible study is relegated to our sleepy times when we can hardly keep our eyes open, or to times when interruptions are likely to happen. Sometimes we get to the Bible at most only once or twice a week.

The Berean story inspires us to find ways to study the Bible daily in our modern context. If you commute to work by train, why not use one of the many Bible Apps and study as you go? If you drive, you can listen to Bible readings or Christian music to help focus your day. Your lunch time could sometimes become your study time.

Each of us knows our own schedule, and, if we’re honest with ourselves, we can find a time to search the Scriptures every day, just like the Bereans did.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your word, and help me please to be eager like the Bereans were and to read your Bible every day. In Jesus’ name.
