When We’re Exhausted, Jesus is There

A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus…”
John 6:18-19 (NIVUK)

The disciples must have been exhausted. It may seem like plain sailing to row for three or four miles when the waters are smooth, but when a gale blows and the waves are out of control, it’s very hard work.

And then the shock of seeing Jesus walking on water. Did they see him in the distance, and wonder what was going on? Jesus, unperturbed by the storm, strolls calmly towards them like he didn’t have a care in the world. I see Jesus smiling at them, his eyes twinkling as he gestures to the disciples to come to him. “It’s only me”, he says, “there’s nothing to worry about”.

So many thoughts come to mind. There are obvious ones such as Jesus can control the weather, by trusting in him maybe we too can walk on water, with Jesus there’s nothing to fear, keep rowing towards Jesus, etc. There is, however, another that I find particularly comforting: in the storms of my life, Jesus is there.

Perhaps, like the disciples, our storms are physical: at the end of a hard day’s work, shattered after a sleep-deprived night, being stuck on the motorway hour after gruelling hour…there are so many things that exhaust us physically. At other times we are emotionally over-stretched through too much stress or because of some disappointment in life. Add to that a spiritual layer, and it can all become too much and we get that sinking feeling.

Whatever storm is going on in your life, Jesus is there with us. He is present with us at all times. He smiles and re-assures us: “It is I,” he says, “Don’t be afraid”.

Great Father, thank you that your son, Jesus, is with me always through the storms of my life. In Jesus’ name.
