Passport Photos

“Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.”
Colossians 3:9-10 (NKJV)

Are you happy with your passport photo? Does it look like you? Of course it must resemble you, but it seems almost nobody is happy with their passport photo, and most feel it is not a reflection of their real self. There is just something about having our photo taken for a passport that makes it the worst possible photo of ourselves.

As Christians we become a new man, or a new creation, as it says in 2 Corinthians 5:17. But imagine we could take a photo of the new man we have become, would we be happy with it or would it look too much like the old man we were before giving ourselves to God? It’s likely the answer would be yes and we would be just as unhappy with it as with our passport photo.

We can all feel the frustration of seeking to follow Jesus Christ, of wanting to be a light and ambassador for Christ, yet too often finding ourselves doing and saying things that are of the old man rather than the new.

But the good news is we can relax and place our trust in God, because God sees the new man, the new creation in Christ, that we will only see properly when Christ returns. I John 3:2 says, “Beloved, now we are the children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.”

We may feel weak, foolish or inadequate as Christians but that is not a feeling that we should focus on or worry about because it is true. Why not? The simple truth is knowing that it all depends on Jesus Christ, who has already done all that is necessary for us because of God’s love for all humanity and us individually.

Just like our passport photo, our “ christian photo” may not reflect what we feel is the real us. But it’s not what we think or see that matters, it’s what God, who looks on the heart, sees and thinks that matters. In God’s eyes, our passport photo into his Kingdom is a perfect reflection of his son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Let’s thank God for that.

Loving Father, thank you for the all-consuming love you have for us, expressed in the physical life, death and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Thank you, Father, that although we are inadequate, Christ is not. Please strengthen our faith and trust in Him. In Christ’s name we pray.
