The Final Solution

“…he will swallow up death forever. The Sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth. The Lord has spoken.”
Isaiah 25:8 (NIV)

In January 1942 Nazi leaders met in conference in a suburb of Berlin. The agenda was the extermination of the Jewish people – genocide. Reinhard Heydrich, Himmler’s second in command of the SS, convened the Wannsee Conference with 15 top Nazi bureaucrats to put the plan into action. This culminated in the Holocaust, which saw the death of two thirds of the European Jewish population. The perpetrators named this iniquitous and evil strategy ‘The Final Solution.’

History bears record to this ‘Final Solution.’ Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, is a tangible testimony to man’s inhumanity to man. The irony was that the evil which took place was not in fact final, as since the end of World War 2 atrocities between factions and nations continue across the globe.

The prophet Isaiah tells us in Isaiah 59:8 why this is, “The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths. They have turned them into crooked roads; no one who walks along them will know peace.” Without God, man is driven by selfish motivation – this is a fact that can only be remedied by a complete change of heart. This metamorphic change is something that only God can make. King David cried out to God in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” When we, His children, cry out to God our Father for a clean heart – He always answers.

We should remember with humility and gratitude the liberty so dearly won by those who have gone before in conflict. It is right that we pause from our daily activities and reflect on the terrible cost of war – without that sacrifice we would not have the freedom we enjoy today.

There is, however, a greater sacrifice that was made for us all—Jesus Christ the Son of God, sacrificed for the sins of the world—yours and mine. He alone is the actual FINAL SOLUTION to the bloodshed and warmongering. He has the victory. He has overcome death (1 Corinthians 15:24-26). He is our glorious future—the final solution is found in Him. We read about it in John 11:25, “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.’”

Come, Lord Jesus, come.

O loving Father—you who sent your only Son to die for us, the unworthy—Lord, we are grateful more than we can express. Jesus, we thank you for your coming to this earth to bring peace. Holy Spirit, we thank you for our sustenance as we wait for our Saviour’s return.
