A True Love Story…

“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
1 John 4:8 (NIV)

It was three months since my husband had died, shopping held no attraction for me but well-meaning friends persuaded me to join them. I was listlessly browsing in a small gift shop when my eye fell upon a heart shaped ceramic pendant intended for hanging up. The words engraved on it were what held my attention. They read as follows: ‘a true love story never ends.’

I thought, how very true and certainly applicable for me personally. However there is a much greater meaning to those words. Christians know that God is love—an unconditional and everlasting love. The Jamieson, Fausset & Brown Commentary says, “God is fundamentally and essentially LOVE: not merely is loving.” Love is God in all its forms.

These precious words provide the greatest comfort anyone grieving can possibly have. Jesus loves us present tense—this is no cliché! He put His life on the line for us “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).

The small ceramic heart hangs in my lounge, reminding me of a love that lasted over fifty years. However I carry in my own heart the knowledge of a God who loves me and will never leave me—that too is a ‘true love story’ that will never end.’

Wonderful Father, thank you for loving us, the unworthy. Thank you for this amazing love that is You. We look forward to the day when we will fully understand the measure of this love, when we see you face to face.
