Vive La Différence

“Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.”
Psalm 150:1 (NIV)

We are all different; thankfully. Some people like loud praise and worship; for them it is sincere and moving. Some like organ accompaniment; for them it is sincere and moving. Some worship with a guitar, a piano or even a cappella; for them it is equally sincere and moving. There isn’t a right or a wrong way when it come to worship styles, only a sincere way from the heart that moves us and honours God; and that will be different for each one of us.

I think that we may be surprised to find that in heaven there isn’t one way of worship that is the ‘correct way’. Heaven will be filled with a variety of praise and worship. The call will go out to those of “every tribe and language and people and nation” (Revelation 5:9) – “Sing for joy to God our strength; shout aloud to the God of Jacob! Begin the music, strike the timbrel, play the melodious harp and lyre.” (Psalm.81:1-2); and heaven will be full of new songs (Revelation 5:9) sincerely praising God for our salvation in Christ Jesus, saying, “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and praise!” (Verse 12) Like the elders in heaven, we will fall down and worship the Lamb (verse 14)

The worship debate will no doubt rage on: Should it be hymns or choruses, traditional or modern, loud or contemplative? As far as God is concerned, he is a God of variety and enjoys being worshipped in different ways from a sincere heart. His desire is that “everything that has breath praise the LORD(Psalm 150:6); how we do that he leaves to us.

So, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4) and long live the difference.

Father, we were made to worship you and enjoy you forever. Give us a heart to want to praise you for all you have done for us in Christ Jesus. And may our variety of worship be pleasing in your sight.
