What Are You Doing?

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.”
James 1:22-24 (KJV)

Isn’t it embarrassing to look in the mirror and find we have been all day with egg on our face? Especially if we noticed it in the morning after breakfast and then forgot to wash it off?

That is just how James describes someone who goes to Church and hears God’s Word, then goes out and forgets to put those words into his life.

James goes on in chapter 2, verses 15-18, to say “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.”

If we say that we are Christians, how can we ignore the poor and needy we come into contact with? We should be supporting effective charities, volunteering our time, praying fervently, lending a helping hand where we can, and providing encouragement and cheer to those around us?

Being a hearer and not a doer is like being in a flight simulator–you never actually get anywhere!

Prayer
Please God, help me to be a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ, not just in name but by the things I say and do. What good is money and comfort if I see others without, and do not share? I want the way I live to tell the world who is my hero, that I worship, so that they will also have access to you, the true source of all comfort and help.
Amen
