Harvest-Care And Share

“Even a King depends on the harvest…”
Ecclesiastes 5:9 (GNT)

When I went to the market last week I was struck with the abundance and variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains available to us. It is so easy to take this abundance for granted. Harvest shows the goodness of God, as in the beginning God saw all that he had made and behold, it was very good! James 1:17 (NLT) says “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father.”

The plenty we enjoy is a result of hard work by those who plough, plant, harvest, buy and sell. Then, when we get our shopping home, we still have to wash, store and prepare it. But we should never forget that it comes from God, who is the one who gives the rain and makes it grow. 1 Corinthians 3:7 (KJV) reminds us “So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.” Like the hymn we sing Great Is Thy Faithfulness—all I have needed thy hand hath provided…summer and winter, springtime and harvest…great is thy faithfulness.

Recently, we had a Harvest Service at Church and rejoiced in our opportunity to bring offerings to share our plenty with others who do not enjoy the same bounty. The items went to a local Food Bank, because sadly, even in the UK there are homeless, hungry, destitute people. At the moment some of us are at our Annual Harvest Festival Convention and on the last day we also take up a collection for a local Food Bank. As Christians we care and share as we are able.

Creator of all, we praise and thank you for the plenty you provide, especially in the harvests. As we enjoy the bountiful harvest, help us to think of those who are hungry and needy, and to care and share from our plenty.
