Gird Up Your Loins

“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
1 Peter 1:13 (KJV)

‘Gird your loins and prepare for battle’—okay, no one says ‘gird up your loins’ any more (which basically means ‘tighten your pants’), but ‘gird’ is still used as a verb to mean ‘to get ready for a dangerous situation’. To gird is to prepare for a military attack, but more loosely it refers to readying oneself for any kind of confrontation. When you gird for something, you are preparing for the worse-case scenario. Gird can also mean ‘fasten something tightly with a belt or a band’.

A brief description of Jewish clothing would be helpful to our understanding. The essential garment for the Jew was the tunic. This was normally a long-flowing and full-cut robe. Because the tunic was so basic, it was almost identical for men and women. The main differences were that the man’s tunic was often shorter (knee length) and more colourful, whereas the woman’s was usually longer (ankle length) and blue.

Ephesians 6:14 says, “Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness”. Paul is challenging the spiritual warrior to be well prepared and equipped to fight the good fight. In the spiritual armour the girdle represents truth. Truth is what brings all the other pieces of the armour together into usefulness and purpose.

“Let your loins be girded about…” (Luke 12:35). The Lord is challenging his disciples to be prepared, ready and looking for the return of the Lord. We are in a battle in the spiritual realm—a battle for our souls and eternal destinies. That is why the Apostle Paul spoke about the armour of God – part of which is to gird ourselves with truth and put on righteousness.

Prayer
Dear Lord, help us to be mindful at all times to be on our guard against the wiles of the devil and to be always girded for the spiritual battle. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
