A Ministerial Conference

“From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church.”
Acts 20:17 (NIVUK)

Re-grouping in order to consolidate relationships and teaching was important to the Apostle Paul. As he travelled through Asia Minor, Paul would sometimes strengthen existing new congregations, sometimes establish new ones, and always he would preach Christ crucified, often in the face of opposition.

In Acts 20 Paul’s intent is to travel to Jerusalem in order to celebrate the Feast of Pentecost and, before doing so, to conduct what today we might call a ministerial conference. He called for the representative leadership of churches in the Ephesus area to meet him in a sea port called Miletus. There was no church recorded in Miletus, which was about 50 miles away from Ephesus, meaning that delegates would have a day or two’s journey to make in order to see him.

Our own denomination hosts a ministerial conference most years in the UK for its European leaders. This year it is over the weekend of the 3rd and 4th September and it is open to all. If you would like to attend, please contact me at james.henderson@gracecom.church

The exhortation will be similar to what Paul said to the Ephesian elders: “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood” (Acts 20:28).

Prayer
Father, thank you for the blessing of congregations and for the ministry leaders that serve among us.  Please inspire and guide the conferences they attend.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen
