Prayer as Continuous Contact with God

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESVUK)

Some time ago I read a news report about a man who was taken off an aeroplane because he had used his phone for prayer.

It’s a sign of the times we live in, when anything overtly religious is often greeted with suspicion. The Christian involved was not doing anything disruptive. While using his phone in the period before being asked to switch on airplane mode, he was using an “app” to make a prayer connection with some other believers when the person sitting next to him was alarmed to notice the word “prayer” on the phone’s screen. The crew was alerted to a potential danger to the flight, and the Christian was escorted off for interrogation. Later, he was released without charge but he missed his scheduled departure.

In the scripture above Paul reminds his readers in Thessalonica that for the Christian prayer is a continuous communication with God. God’s connection with us in Christ Jesus is never broken, even though sometimes we may let ourselves down by not responding to it. We may have our scheduled times of prayer, but also let’s remember that every moment is a moment of contact with God.

Of course, in this age of terrorism, I understand why some formats of prayer might cause concern on a flight. In the instance, however, of the prayer “app” it seems like an over-reaction!

Whatever our circumstances, let’s keep praying!

Prayer
In this day of instant communication, Lord, help us to pray without ceasing. In Jesus’ names.
Amen
