Time and Chance

“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

In these days of terrorism and frequent tragedy, time and chance seems to pervade society. How often have we heard it said that if your ‘number ‘is up—that is it? Life can feel like a game of roulette, full of risks and possibilities. The author of Ecclesiastes understood this in Ecclesiastes 9:11: “but time and chance happen to them all.” No matter how great or small we are in social strata, we are not exempt from time and chance.

Should we be worried about this? Should we hibernate with a well-stocked larder? The impracticalities of the latter scream a resounding no! Seriously though, should we have fear in our hearts every time we go out of our front door? 1 John 4:18 tells us that we have no need to fear: “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” We are being made perfect through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ the Son of God, as it tells us in Hebrews 10:14, “For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” This is the antidote to fear.

In this world we may become victims to time and chance, but always God has us in the palm of His hand—nothing happens to us that He does not know about. He has His plans for us all sewn up, therefore we have a joyous and glorious future that no ill deed in this life can change. All down to Jesus!

Prayer
Great Eternal God, we thank you so much for the hope and joy wrapped up in our future thanks to the sacrifice of your beloved Son Jesus. We look to you for our safety and provision, but most of all for our salvation.
Amen
