Hope For Creation

“…the whole creation groans…”
Romans 8:22 (NKJV)

In the news recently it has been reported that summer crops in the British Isles may be devastated by moths. Some have compared the idea to the biblical plague of locusts.

The fear is based on the arrival of swarms of diamondback moths in alarming proportions, perhaps a hundred times more than normal. The moths feed on essential crops such as cabbages, which are used as winter feed for livestock.

In the Bible the plague of locusts is described thus: “And the locusts went up over all the land…they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they ate every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees…So there remained nothing green on the trees or on the plants of the field throughout all the land of Egypt” (Exodus 10:14-15). It sounds frightening! Let’s hope and pray that our crops are not so devastated this summer due to the diamondback moth!

The plague of locusts was regarded as a punishment on Egypt because Pharaoh did not listen to God’s request to free captives from slavery so that they might gather together in worship. An invasion of voracious locusts was something people feared in the ancient Near East.

What about today? I doubt whether we should regard such occurrences in terms of punishment from our gracious God, but maybe we can realize that sometimes we bring disasters on ourselves. Is it that we interfere so much in the natural order of things that we hold creation back? Is this what Paul hints at in Romans?

Paul described creation in terms of a person who groans inwardly as he waits in hope to be delivered from slavery: “…the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God…because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God” (Romans 8:19-21).

Prayer
Creator God, please protect us from ourselves and from our own foolishness.  Thank you for the hope we have in Jesus, with whom we, as your adopted children, will appear at his coming, when all creation will be delivered. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
