Provenance

“What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”
Psalm 8:4 (NIV)

My husband and I used to enjoy watching programmes about antiques on television. Almost without exception the expert will ask the owner about the item’s provenance. Where did it come from? How did they come by it? Was it a family heirloom? The expert is trying to assess the value of the item. Sometimes people find their precious items in the most unlikely of places, recently some exquisite jewellery was found in a skip!

What about our provenance? I am referring to our spiritual origins. Are we rare and precious items, do we have a spectacular lineage? Paul sets the record straight in Romans 3:23 when he says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Our righteousness is described in Isaiah as ‘filthy rags.’ (Isaiah 64:6). Therefore it is fair to say our spiritual ‘provenance’ is similar to that skip! God asked Job in chapter 38:4, ‘Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand.”

Any righteousness we have is of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:30 tells us “it is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.”

Our provenance begins and ends with our Saviour Jesus Christ and it is priceless!

Prayer
Father, thank you for rescuing us from our sins and cleansing us with the blood of Jesus, we can never be grateful enough.
Amen
