Clothed by God

“And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.”
Genesis 3:7 (ESVUK)

I watched my wife use a sewing machine the other day, and I thought of the scripture above. Not that she was running large fig leaves through the machine to make us some matching, fetching outfits…

The context of Genesis 3:7 is interesting. Although the serpentine Satan had slithered down from his tree and misled Eve, and although, according the Paul, Adam may have been more culpable than his wife because he was not deceived, both Adam and Eve sinned. They chose a lifestyle that they thought would make them wise and also free to do what they wanted to do. They then felt exposed by their choice, and sought to fix it by patching things up together. Spiritually speaking, however, their nakedness still had to be covered.

Their makeshift coverings did not last long. The Bible tells us that “the Lord God made for Adam and his wife garments of skins and clothed them” (verse 21). God, who had given them paradise to live in, also provided for them when they rejected him.

There’s a lesson for us here. We cannot cover our sinfulness by our own efforts no matter how hard we try. Instead we are covered by God’s grace found in Jesus Christ, and it is he who gives us all that we may need to rejoice in his presence. Isaiah points to this idea: “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord; my soul shall exult in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation; he has covered me with the robe of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:10).

In Christ, God has turned our regrets over sin into the joy of his covering grace, and he has clothed each and every one of us with the gladness that being restored to him brings (see Psalm 30:11).

Prayer
Holy Father, I know that in vain sometimes I try to deal with my own sinfulness by myself, but thank you that you help me and that you cover my life with your saving grace. In Jesus’ name.
Amen
