The God Of The Old Testament

“Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one!”
Deuteronomy 6:4 (NKJV)

Does the Bible reveal who was the God of the Old testament? 2 Timothy 3:16 says the scriptures are inspired and profitable for doctrine, wisdom and instruction in righteousness, so let’s look into the inspired scriptures to see if there is an answer there.

The Apostle Paul was inspired to reveal this in 1 Corinthians 10:4, speaking of Moses and the Israelites coming out of Egypt, “…and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was CHRIST.” And in verse 9, “…nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted and were destroyed by serpents;”

In John 5:37, Jesus said, “And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.” Christ was the express image of the Father, the Word who became flesh. Jesus Christ represented God. This is apparent in the New Testament as well as in the Old. Paul says, “…that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ;” (Ephesians 3:8-9)

It seems clear that Jesus Christ appeared as a human being to Abraham in Genesis chapter 18; wrestled with Jacob as a man in Genesis 32:24, 29-30; and spoke to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend in Exodus 33:11. He was the ‘I AM’ of Exodus 3:13-14, and the Lord who delivered Israel, the spiritual Rock who led them through the wilderness. In John 8:57-58 Jesus refers to Himself as the I AM when questioned by the Jews, saying, “…before Abraham was, I AM.”

God is ONE, yet we know the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit are of the same substance—God is Spirit. If we are to believe the Scriptures, then Jesus Christ, the Spiritual Rock, was the God of the Old Testament, the I Am, God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob.

Prayer
Our Father in Heaven, thank you for your Word. Your Word is truth. Help us to believe it and know that you are the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom you sent. In Jesus’ name I ask.
Amen
